Tendai Sect to conduct full-scale investigation after nun’s claims of repeated sexual abuse, however, will not publish the results

Back in late January, Eicho - a 55-year-old, devoted Buddhist nun living on the main island of Shikoku had filed a complaint for sexual abuse to the head office of the Tendai sect of Buddhism.

More specifically, she claimed that the chief priest had been sexually assaulting her multiple times over 14 years from 2009 to 2023 and constantly threatening her with remarks such as: “You will go to hell if you dare to defy me.” There was another priest who, although fully aware of the situation, decided to stay silent and did nothing to help Eicho.

In tears, she said how the two monks, though ones who are supposed to guide people, had taken advantage of her faith in Buddha to abuse her both physically and mentally. Thus, she hopes that the Tendai sect will punish the two monks appropriately for the harm that they have caused.

In response to the situation, the Tendai sect had launched a full-scale investigation to confirm the facts of the situation. It has begun to interview Eicho since 1 PM today, March 4th. However, it also stated that the final results of the investigation would not be made public and that there would not be any external announcements or press conferences.
