Husband sentenced to 18 years in prison for murdering wife and 10-month-old daughter

The Supreme Court made its official judgment on the case that happened 2 years ago where a male physical therapist had murdered both his wife and daughter on New Year’s Day. On 9 May, the Court dismissed the man’s appeal and upheld his 18-year sentence.

The defendant, the 36-year-old former physical therapist, was charged with murder for stabbing his wife and 10-month-old daughter with a knife at their private home in Kagoshima city. The murder was committed two years ago on New Year’s Day.

During the trial, the defendant admitted to the charges brought against him but argued that his actions were influenced by depression and his mental instability. However, both the Kagoshima District Court in the first trial and the Fukuoka High Court Miyazaki branch in the second trial rejected this argument on the grounds that the influence of his mental illness was minimal and thus sentenced him to 18 years in prison.

The man appealed this decision, in which the Court made the final decision on 9 May to reject the appeal, thus confirming his 18-year sentence.
