Thousands of tons of sardines to mysteriously washed ashore in Hakodate, Hokkaido, stretching roughly 1 kilometer long

On the morning of December 7, a large number of fish, the majority of which were sardines, were found washed up on the beach between Hamacho and Hiura in Hakodate City.

An eyewitness shared: “At around 6 AM on December 7, I thought that the beach looked strange so I went over to check and found a large number of fish washed over the shore, covering several kilometers along the beach. I was born and raised in Hamacho, but this is my first time seeing anything like this.”

The majority of the washed-up fish were Japanese sardines, mixed in with some mackerel. Some residents were seen loading the fish onto their trucks to bring home.

With the strong smell of fish wafting in the air, Hakodate City’s Fishery Deivion has dispatched staff to investigate the situation in the area. They also urged citizens not to take the fish home.
