Tokyo’s Shinagawa City to start covering HPV vaccine for Men

Tokyo’s Shinagawa City will cover the full cost of getting vaccinated against HPV - the human papillomavirus, for men starting from today.

The vaccine provides effective protection against HPV infections and viruses that can cause cervical cancer. As part of their regular vaccination program, Japan had been subsidizing HPV vaccination for women between the 6th grade of elementary school and the first year of high school.

The vaccine was also proven to be effective in preventing oropharyngeal cancer and anal cancer in me and protecting women from possible infections caused by sexual intercourse.

Thus, Shinagawa City decided to cover the full cost of HPV vaccination for men (50,000 yen) starting today, April 1st. The subsidy will be available to men between the 6th grade of elementary school and the first year of high school who reside within the city and can receive three vaccine doses at designated medical institutions.
