First, it will start accepting applications from eligible power companies. Contractors with power companies that have passed the government's screening are expected to receive the points as early as the middle of August.
The recruitment period for power companies participating in the project is from 4 August to 30 September. As soon as applications are received from the power companies, they will be screened to ensure that their applications are appropriate. Subscribers to the electricity companies that pass the screening will receive points worth 2,000 yen for households and 200,000 yen for companies if they declare their participation in the respective company's program by 31 December.
According to the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry, there are 90 million electricity contracts in Japan for households and businesses combined. Half of these are expected to participate in the project, and approximately 180 billion yen from the current year's reserve fund will be allocated to the project. There are currently around 700 electricity sales companies, and the Ministry of Economy, Trade, and Industry expects around 100 companies to participate.
The project aims to combat the 'electricity shortage' expected in the winter and rising electricity prices. Therefore, the electricity companies that apply will need to create a program to encourage households and businesses to save electricity from December to March next year. The government intends to support the winter program with government funds.
