1. What is Aoshima Cat Island?

Aoshima - more commonly known by its other name “Cat Island,” is a small island in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. The island is well known not only among Japanese people but also among animal lovers from all over the world.

Originally a bustling fishing island, over time, the younger generation there began leaving to leave the small island to move to bigger cities. Thus, only the elderly and cats are left behind. The cat population continued to thrive in contrast with the handful of residents living there, with the number of cats outnumbering the human population by roughly eight to one. The majority of breeds represented at Aoshima are orange and brown tabbies, as well as calicos.

The number of feline residents here is so impressive to the point where the cats can get into your pictures no matter where you point your camera!

The residents here, both cats and humans, are very friendly, and we’re sure that everyone will have a good time here.

2. How to get to Aoshima Cat Island

Take the JR Yosan Line at Matsuyama Station and then drop off at JR Iyonagahama Station. From there, it takes roughly 5 minutes on foot to get to Nagahama Port, from which you can take the boat to the island. The ride takes roughly 35 minutes. There are also parking spaces near the Port, so you can also drive there as well!

There are 2 departures per day at 8 AM and 2:30 PM respectively and only one return trip at 4:15. However, as the number of seats is limited, we recommend taking the first boat to be extra careful!

Price:

  • Adult (12 years old and up): ¥680/ one way (¥1360 for round trip)
  • Children (6-12 years old): ¥340/ one way (¥680 for round trip)

3. What to expect and things to keep in mind

Before deciding to go here, keep in mind that Aoshima is not a place designed for tourists. You won’t be able to find restaurants, hotels, or shops on the island. Therefore, should come prepared and bring all of your food, drinks, and whatever you might need during the visit. Also don’t forget to bring all of your garbage back with you!

Also remember to be respectful of the residents there, whether they are cats or humans!

You also need to follow the island’s rule, one of which is to only feed the cats at designated locations. No matter how cute the cats are and how much they plead with you for food, make sure not to forget this!
