Firework Festivals in Tokyo that you cannot miss out on this Summer

Summer is one of the most interesting seasons in Japan, with heaps of interesting events, festivals, and cultural activities for you to experience; one of which is magnificent firework displays.

In this article, GoEMON will introduce you to some of the best and most spectacular fireworks displays that you definitely cannot miss out on this summer in Japan!


1. Tokyo City Pop Fireworks 2024 (Fuchu City) 

Held at the JRA Tokyo Racecourse in Fuchu, Tokyo City Pop Fireworks Festival is one of the largest fireworks displays in Tokyo. The event’s theme changes each year, and as you can probably already tell from the name, this year’s theme is ‘City Pop’ - a form of Japanese pop music from the 1970s to the 1980s. Thus, the fireworks will be launched in sync with these nostalgic tunes from famous Japanese artists during this time.

2. Adachi Fireworks Festival (Adachi City) 

Held along the Arakawa River in Tokyo, the Adachi Fireworks Festival is famous for offering participants with a super close view of the fireworks, which is sure to blow everyone’s minds away. The event has a unique blend of traditional and modern Japanese culture, featuring magnificent fireworks displays launched in synchronization with timed music.

3. Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival (Katsushika Ward)

Well-known for its creative and unique fireworks display, the Katsushika Noryo Fireworks Festival is another event that those living in Tokyo definitely should not skip out on this summer. Participants can enjoy the fireworks while leisurely strolling the road leading to Shibatama Taishakuten - the heart of the Shibatama area. This year, approximately 15,000 fireworks will be set, illuminating the night sky of Katsushika. The event is also popular among couples, as you can see many of them exploring the area white dressed in yukata prior to the festival.

4. Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival 2024 (Taito City)

Annually, at the end of July, the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival lights up the Sumida River with 20,000 fireworks. It's a massive event best viewed from the riverbank, although it can get crowded, so arriving early is recommended for the best seating.

5. Itabashi Fireworks Festival 2024 (Itabashi City)

Held on the banks of the Arakawa River, the Itabashi Fireworks Festival is one that you definitely should not miss. With a total of 15,000 fireworks scheduled to be launched, the festival also features the “No.15” variant, which is one of the largest that you can find in Tokyo. Though the event is free, reserved seating is also available for those who want to get the best view of the fireworks.

6. Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival (Shinjuku)

First held to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the founding of the Jingu Gaien, the Jingu Gaien Fireworks Festival then became a popular annual event. The festival is held in Meiji Jingu Stadium with the participation of many renowned artists. Combined with the magnificent fireworks display, this is an event definitely worth checking out.

7. Edogawa Fireworks Festival (Edogawa)

Along with the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival, the Edogawa Fireworks Festival is well-known as one of the largest fireworks events in Tokyo. Rightfully so, as 14,000 fireworks are to be launched, illuminating the Edogawa night sky in all sorts of bright colors and interesting shapes.
