Despite not being a traditional holiday rooted in the country, Halloween is undeniably one of the most widely celebrated holidays in Japan. One of the best ways to celebrate this spooky event in Japan is to go to theme parks, where there are exclusive, large-scale Halloween events.

1. Universal Studios Japan - Halloween Horror Nights and HAHAHA! Halloween Party

When it comes to theme parks in Japan, one simply cannot fail to mention USJ - Universal Studios Japan. Located in Osaka, the park welcomes millions of visitors each year. USJ also goes over and beyond to celebrate Halloween by hosting a grand Halloween event featuring thrilling Halloween-specific rides, foods, parades, and souvenirs for you to try out!


The vibes of the park are completely different based on the time of the day. Events in the morning for HAHAHA! Halloween Party are all cute and cheerful, such as a Pokemon party with the appearance of DJ Pikachu, Halloween Greetings with My Melody and Kuromi, and trick-or-treat events. As the sun sets and night falls, Halloween Horror Night commences and the park takes a dark turn as cast members dressed as zombies roam the street to scare visitors. 2. Tokyo Disney Resort - Disney Halloween

For 2024, Tokyo Disney Resort is holding a huge Halloween event called “Disney Halloween 2024”, which takes place at both Disneyland and DisneySea, each including special entertainment activities. At Disneyland, make sure not to miss the parade featuring over a whopping 100 characters, including villains such as Maleficent and Jafar, along with the iconic group of Mickey and his friends. You can also watch as fireworks light up the sky over the Cinderella Castle. 


In DisneySea, seasonal decorations are placed at various locations around the park along with Halloween-themed activities such as trick-or-treating or greeting events with your favorite Disney characters. Don’t forget to get some special Halloween merchandise and Halloween-inspired foods! During the event period, guests are also encouraged to dress themselves in Halloween-inspired costumes and makeup to truly emerge in the park’s festivities.

3. Sanrio Puroland - PUROHALLOWEEN

This would be the perfect option for Sanrio enthusiasts. Sanrio Puroland takes a completely different turn from your common eerier and spooky Halloween as it hosts events including professional music shows, parade, and meet and greet events featuring iconic Sanrio characters such as Hello Kitty, Cinnamoroll, Kuromi, PomuPomuPurin, and more in their “spooky” wizard outfits. As the overall theme is designed to be cute and bright, this would be suitable for families with young children or those who prefer something a little bit less “hardcore”!


Visitors will also have the chance to try out new dishes from the special Halloween-themed food menu. The foods are made from seasonal ingredients such as sweet potato and pumpkin and are shaped to look like the Sanrio characters, making them not only filling for your stomach but also satisfying for the eyes (and completely Instagram-worthy as well!)

4. Huis Ten Bosch - Halloween Festival

Located in Nagasaki, Huis Ten Bosch is a unique theme park known for its incredible recreation of the charms of a Dutch village, giving its visitors the chance to have a taste of Europe right here in Japan. To welcome Halloween, from September to early November, Huis Ten Bosch will transform into a festive and spooky wonderland, featuring a variety of different Halloween decorations throughout the park and many spectacular Halloween-themed activities and shows. 


This year for Halloween, you can take part in various thrilling events such as screaming from the top of your lungs at the horror mazes and haunted palaces or marveling at the elegant lantern night show and magnificent firework shows! If you are looking for a place to scream and laugh to your heart’s content, this is definitely the spot you can’t miss!

Also known as “IKEHALO’, the Ikebukuro Halloween cosplay festival is an event that cosplay enthusiasts definitely cannot miss. Held annually during the Halloween season, IKEHALO has much to offer to its participants, from lively stage events, magnificent parades, and interesting exhibition booths, to chances to socialize, interact, and even take photos with other cosplayers. Thus, with so much waiting for you to explore, the event is suitable not only for cosplayers but also for photographers and fans of Japanese anime, manga, and games.
