Two unexploded bombs found near Miyako Airport, Okinawa

Following the explosion of a U.S. bomb at Miyazaki Airport, two unexploded 250-kilogram bombs that were believed to have been dropped during World War II were also discovered near Miyako Airport in Okinawa. Miyakojima City and Okinawa Prefectural officials say that the two bombs were found during a magnetic survey conducted on the 8th and 11th of this month on a field adjacent to the airport, one on each day.

These bombs are the same size as the bomb that exploded on the taxiway at Miyazaki Airport earlier on the 2nd of this month. They are believed to have been used by the British military, which engaged alongside the U.S. military in attacking Miyakojima and other locations during World War II.

Miyako Airport is located on the site where there used to be an airfield of the Former Japanese Navy. Last year, five 50-kilogram U.S. bombs were also discovered and disposed of near the airport.

Coordination between Miyakojima City and the specialized unit of the Self-Defense Forces is underway to swiftly dispose of the two bombs.

Emergency inspections at five airports nationwide where former imperial Japanese military facilities were located are being carried out, starting with that of Miyazaki airport on the 16th.
