Parts of Japan are hit by extreme heatwave, reaching 40 degrees

On the 29th, temperatures rose significantly in areas in Eastern and Western Japan. In Shizuoka Prefecture, temperatures have already surpassed 40 degrees Celsius, reaching dangerous levels that can be life-threatening. Hamamatsu, Shizuoka Prefecture recorded 40.2°C at 11:42 AM.

Dangerous levels of heatwaves were also recorded among other regions of Japan. As of 11:30 AM, the temperature reached 38.7 degrees Celsius in Sano, Tochigi Prefecture; 38.3 in Hachioji, Tokyo and Hatoyama, Saitama Prefecture; 38.2 degrees in Kiryuu, Gunma Prefecture; and 38.1 degrees in Kuwana, Mie Prefecture.

The Japan Meteorological Agency advises people to avoid unnecessary outings and exercises, as well as not to hesitate to use air conditioners and ensure frequent hydration with water and electrolytes in order to prevent heatstrokes. It has also issued heatstroke alters for 38 out of 47 of the country’s prefectures from Tohoku to Kyushu due to extreme risks of heatstrokes.

Special attention is to be given to the elderly and infants for they are more sensitive to extreme temperatures and thus are at higher risks of developing heatstrokes.
