In an effort to enhance the protection of elderly individuals with dementia who may not be able to return home due to dementia, Hirosaki City in Aomori Prefecture has begun to distribute free stickers of QR codes to city residents. The initiative, which began in September, encourages the elderly to stick the stickers on their fingernails.
These “Nail QR Stickers” stickers measure one-centimeter square. They are designed to stay intact even when in contact with water, such as during baths or hand-washing, and can last roughly 2 weeks. When scanned with a smartphone, a three-digit registration number and the city’s contact details will pop up. The individual’s identity can consequently be determined by reporting this number to the city.
To use the stickers, individuals will need to register information such as their name, address, and family contacts at the city office. A total of approximately 180 Hirosaki city residents are expected to receive the stickers. Each person will be given 24 stickers to use over a one-year period.
In previous attempts, Hirosaki City had distributed keychains with registration numbers and iron-on stickers for clothing. However, many elderly people forget to bring the keychains with them or do not wear clothes with stickers when going out.
A representative from the city’s welfare department shared how they want to raise awareness of the initiative and alleviate the concerns of both elderly citizens and their families.
