At around 10:55 PM on the 12th, a 58-year-old man from Kyoto Prefecture who was visiting Naha City, Okinawa for sightseeing was assaulted by two men on the sidewalk near Tomarikita Park. The man’s phone was stolen and he also suffered serious injuries including a fracture of the medial wall below his right eye. The Naha Police Station is investigating the incident as a robbery resulting in injury.
According to the police, the man was on his way to the hotel where he was staying when he was pinned down from behind and punched in the face multiple times. The man was about to let go of his backpack and tried to resist, but then the smartphone that he was holding was taken away. The perpetrators then fled in the direction of Tomari Elementary School.
The site where the accident occurred is a residential area lined with elementary schools and nursery schools. The police are searching for the duo by interviewing people living there and checking footage from nearby security cameras.
