Expectations for technology that does not allow spoofing

In order to protect society, organizations, and individuals from various dangers in the world, such as online crime and terrorism, a mechanism has been put in place to authenticate individuals using PINs, passwords, fingerprints, faces, and so on. Under these circumstances, industry-academia research groups such as the University of Tokyo have announced that they have newly demonstrated the principle of authenticating individuals by exhalation. Chemically analyze the molecules contained in the exhaled breath. Unlike fingerprints and faces, it may be used as a technology with merits such as extremely difficult "spoofing".

Biometrics has been developed using fingerprints, palm prints, faces, irises, retinas, finger veins, ear sounds (reflexes of sounds determined by the shape of the ear canal), voice prints, and so on. However, these have problems such as deterioration of the accuracy in case of injury and long-term spoofing when information is forged or stolen.

On the other hand, it is thought that these problems can be overcome by reading the types and proportions of molecules in the gas emitted from the body. Once the gas is used for authentication, it will fly away, so there is an advantage that others will not impersonate for a long time. Therefore, research using gas emitted from the skin has been conducted, but since the concentration of many molecules remains at the ppt (1/1 trillion) to ppb (1/1 billion) level, the detection limit of the sensor is limited. It is said that it was far below.
