A local fisherman has caught a giant squid, which lives in the deep sea off the coast of Tarama Island, Okinawa Prefecture.
The giant squid was caught by a fisherman from Ishigaki Island.
He said that "On the 4th of this month when I was fishing for squid about 30 kilometers south of Tarama Island, I found a giant squid that had bitten the hook, it was a squid of the Daio species."
The landed giant squid was 7.8 meters long and weighed about 100 kilograms.
“At first, I thought it was a shark, but when I pulled it up, it turned out to be a large squid, which surprised me. It was the first time I realized that such creatures live near Ishigaki Island"
Regarding this, Atsushi Kaneko, chief of the Okinawa Churaumi Aquarium in Motobu Town, said, "There are cases in the prefecture where giant squid are caught during squid fishing like this time. The caught individuals are displayed at the aquarium. The total length is about 1 meter longer than the existing specimen, and it is rare for a giant squid of this size to be caught."
